Hi Folk
Today I would like to ask you the same question that Joshua asked the Israelites. Whom will you serve? Will you serve Yahweh or other gods? Maybe you, like the Israelites will answer that we will serve Yahweh. Then like Joshua I must tell you that you are not able to serve God, because Yahweh is a jealous God. You see God wants our hearts, God wants nothing to be in our hearts which take the place of Him. The truth be told we all have some or other idol erected in our hearts. Maybe it’s our job, our security, our legitimacy. All of these things can become more important to us than God. For many of us our families take first place.
Oh we will argue that that is not the case, but what if you are stripped of everything that you hold dear, will you still serve God? This is not an easy question to answer, and until such time as you face loss of that which you hold dear you are not able to answer this question. When you stare down the barrel of retrenchment, divorce, health issues where is your heart at? Are you trying to hang onto those things or do you still sing God’s praises?
We all have stuff in our hearts that take up space: loves; likes and addictions which make us who we are, that define us that keep us feeling in control. But like Joshua I am asking you this day to “throw away the foreign gods that are among you and yield your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.”
Blessings and love
Harry
